How Are Your Feet and Ankles?

Introduction

Think about your day.

From the moment we get out of bed, our feet and ankles are already working. We walk to the bathroom. We move around the house. We go to work or school. We climb stairs. We run errands. We stand for long periods. Between all these movements, we hardly think about our feet and ankles until they start hurting.

Your Feet and Ankles Do A LOT

Your feet are your body's connection to the ground, while your ankles help your feet move and support you as you walk, stand and change direction.

Every step you take involves them.

They help you stand, walk, balance and move from one place to another. As a result of the work they do, the way you treat them matters.

Your footwear (especially ladies who wear heels): how long you stand, how much you walk and even the surfaces you walk on can affect how your feet and ankles feel.

Sometimes, that tired or uncomfortable feeling after a long day is simply your body saying, “I've been working!”

What Can You Do?

Start paying attention to your feet and ankles. Wear footwear that is appropriate for the activity you're doing.

  • Going for a walk? Wear comfortable walking shoes.

  • Heading to work? Choose footwear you can comfortably stand and move around in.

  • Attending a wedding or formal event? Heels are fine if that's your preference, but a lower, more stable heel may be more comfortable if you'll be standing or walking for long.

  • Exercising? Well padded footwear.

Don't ignore persistent pain, swelling or discomfort simply because you are used to it. Pain that keeps returning deserves attention. While our feet may be small, they carry us through our entire day, and our ankles help make that movement possible.

Challenge for the day:

Pay attention to your feet and ankles today. Notice how they feel after walking, standing, and when you have been on your feet for a long time.

You may be surprised by how much they actually do for you every day.

Final Thoughts

We often focus on our back, neck, shoulders and knees when we talk about movement. But do not forget the two things carrying us through it all – our feet and ankles. Let's take care of them; and not wait until they start shouting before we pay attention.
