How Do You Sleep?

Introduction

After everything we do during the day, our bodies deserve a good night's rest. But here is a question: How do you actually sleep?

On your back? On your side? On your stomach? Curled up like a question mark?

We all have our favourite sleeping positions, but have we ever stopped to think about how they affect our bodies?

Your Sleeping Position Matters

There is not one sleeping position that is perfect for everyone. What feels comfortable for one person may leave another person waking up with a stiff neck, aching back or uncomfortable shoulders. Sometimes, the problem is not simply how we sleep, but how long we stay in one position and whether that position puts unnecessary strain on certain parts of the body. For example, sleeping on our stomach can place our neck in a rotated position for a long period, and strain our back. Sleeping in an awkward position can leave us waking up wondering: “What did I do to myself in my sleep?”

What Can We Do?

First, pay attention to how your body feels when you wake up. Do you regularly wake up with neck pain? Back stiffness? Shoulder discomfort? That may be worth paying attention to.

If you sleep on your side, a pillow that keeps your head and neck comfortably aligned can help. If you sleep on your back, make sure your pillow supports your head and neck comfortably. If you love sleeping on your stomach, consider changing positions to reduce any discomfort you are experiencing. But most importantly, choose comfort and support rather than forcing yourself into a position because someone said it's the “best.”

Challenge for the day:

Tonight, before you fall asleep, take a moment to notice: How am I positioned?

And tomorrow morning, notice how your body feels when you wake up.

Final Thoughts

Sleep is more than simply closing our eyes and hoping for the best. It's an important part of how our bodies rest and recover. So, let's pay attention to how we sleep – not because there's one perfect position, but because our comfort matters.
