House Chores - Another Way To Move
Introduction
Do you know that house chores can also be considered as exercises?
Sweeping. Mopping. Washing. Cooking. Doing laundry. Cleaning. Carrying things around the house. You probably don't put on your workout clothes before doing any of these. But guess what? Your body is still moving.
Your Everyday Movement Counts
Understand this:
When you are sweeping, you are standing, walking and repeatedly moving your arms.
When you are mopping, you are reaching, pushing and pulling.
When you are doing laundry, you are bending, lifting and carrying.
When you are cleaning, you are moving between different positions and using different parts of your body.
These may not look like a traditional workout, but they involve physical activity; and that matters.
Sometimes, we think being physically active only means going to the gym, running or following a structured exercise programme. But movement happens in many forms throughout the day. Your everyday activities count too.
Do You Think It Is Enough?
Now, before you suddenly cancel your gym membership because you cleaned the entire house over the weekend; let's clarify something.
House chores are a great way to stay active, but they do not necessarily provide everything your body needs from structured exercise. Depending on what you're doing, chores may not challenge your strength, cardiovascular fitness or flexibility in the same way a planned exercise routine can. So, yes, it is good to count your chores as movement, but do not necessarily count them as your entire exercise routine.
Challenge for the day:
The next time you are doing a chore, notice how much your body is actually doing. How often are you bending? Reaching? Walking? Lifting? Pushing? Pulling? You may realise that your body has been working harder than you thought.
While you are at it, remember to use good movement habits – especially when lifting or carrying heavier objects.
Final Thoughts
Physical activity is not only what happens when you put on your trainers and start exercising. Sometimes, it's the sweeping you almost did not want to do. The laundry you have been postponing. The cleaning you have been avoiding.
Your everyday life gives you opportunities to move. Take advantage of them. However, if you want to improve your fitness, don't stop at chores – add intentional exercise that suits your body, abilities and goals. Every bit of movement matters.
